The ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch) is a state-approved examination and assessment system for German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language. OSD (ÖSD) exams correspond to the levels of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” (CEFR). Center for German Studies, Chandigarh is the first OSD center in India and the only center in northern India.

·         A1 Grundstufe Deutsch 1 (GD 1) - Equivalent to CEFR Level A1 (Breakthrough)

An exam for learners aged 14 and over with sufficient knowledge of German to deal with simple everyday situations at an elementary level.


The OSD A1 GD1 and all higher OSD certificates (A2 to C2) are accepted in Austria as proof of language ability in the new Immigration Act of 2011 (and for reunification of spouses in the visa process) as well as in Germany (new Immigration Act of July 2007 for reunification of spouses in the visa process). 

·         A1 Kompetenz in Deutsch 1 (KID 1) - Equivalent to CEFR Level A1 (Breakthrough) 

An exam for children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 14. It assesses their language ability in basic everyday situations relevant to children and young people. 

·         A2 Grundstufe Deutsch 2 (GD 2)- Equivalent to CEFR Level A2 (Waystage) 

An exam for learners aged 14 and over whose knowledge of German is sufficient to deal with situations in private and professional contexts at a higher elementary level. 

The OSD A2 GD2 and all higher OSD certificates (A2 to C2) are also accepted as proof of language ability in the Integration Agreement (IA 2011, Module 1). 

·         A2 Kompetenz in Deutsch 2 (KID 2)- Equivalent to CEFR Level A2 (Waystage) 


An exam for children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 14. It assesses their language ability in everyday situations at school as well as in private and in semi-public situations. 

·         B1 Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD)- Equivalent to CEFR Level B1 (Threshold) 

An exam for learners aged 16 and over who can already deal with everyday situations without difficulty, also when travelling as tourists or when talking about their own interests and areas of specialization. The emphasis is on communicative competence but attention is also paid to formal accuracy. 

The “Zertifikat Deutsch” was developed by the OSD in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, telc GmbH and the Centre for Language Learning and Research at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. 

The OSD B1 ZD and all higher OSD certificates (B2 to C2) are also accepted as proof of language ability in the Integration Agreement for permanent residence in Austria (IA 2011, Module 2) and/or Austrian citizenship. 

·         B1 Zertifikat Deutsch für Jugendliche (ZDj)- Equivalent to CEFR Level B1 (Threshold)

A variation on “Zertifikat Deutsch” designed especially for young people aged 12 to 16. The main difference between ZD and ZDj is that the texts and topics are chosen to suit the age group while the length and format of the tasks are identical.
B1 ZDj was developed by the OSD in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, telc GmbH and the Centre for Language Learning and Research at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. 

·         B2 Mittelstufe Deutsch (MD)- Equivalent to the CEFR Level B2 (Vantage) 

An exam for learners aged 16 and over who are able to communicate clearly and in detail on a broad range of topics and who can conduct a normal conversation with native speakers spontaneously and fluently. 

The B2 Mittelstufe Deutsch Diploma is accepted by some Austrian, German and Swiss universities as proof of German language skills as required for university entrance. 

·         C1 Oberstufe Deutsch (OD)- Equivalent to CEFR Level C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency) 

An exam for learners aged 16 and over who can master professional and social situations, even in more complex contexts. The C1 Oberstufe Deutsch Diploma is accepted by most Austrian, German and Swiss universities as proof of German language skills as required for university entrance. 

·         C2 Wirtschaftssprache Deutsch (WD)- Equivalent to CEFR Level C2 (Mastery) 

An exam for learners aged 16 and over which has been developed in co-operation with the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. The exam requires a high level of general language competence as well as specialist language competence in the areas of business and economics.
The C2 Wirtschaftssprache Deutsch Diploma is accepted by Austrian, German and Swiss universities as proof of German language skills as required for university entrance.
